The Town of Bethel has bought a former bank building for $1.35 million, according to land records.
The town acquired the 7,020-square-foot building on 0.71 acres at 159 Greenwood Ave. because of its location next to the Bethel Public Library and across from Town Hall, First Selectman Dan Carter said.
“It’s a unique opportunity,” he said. “The whole point is to get the land.”
Carter said the property could provide additional parking for library programs. The building may be leased to a tenant interested in creating a makerspace for community use, though the town is also considering demolition if a suitable tenant cannot be found.
“We’ve had a few people show interest,” he said.
The building was previously occupied by a Wells Fargo branch that closed in 2024.
The seller was HAH Holdings Bethel LLC, controlled by William Hoadley of Kent. Hoadley purchased the property for $1.2 million in February 2025. The building was constructed in 1960 and is appraised at $1.24 million.
