BermudAir suspends Bradley Airport service; third airline to exit in recent months

BermudAir has suspended its nonstop service between Bradley International Airport and Bermuda, marking the third airline to exit Connecticut’s largest airport in recent months.

The Connecticut Airport Authority said the carrier cited a shift in its network strategy for the decision to end the service.

“The Connecticut Airport Authority is disappointed that BermudAir has elected to suspend its nonstop service between Bradley International Airport and Bermuda due to a shift in their network strategy,” the authority said in a statement Tuesday morning.

The Bermuda-based carrier launched service at Bradley in April, offering twice-weekly flights on Thursdays and Sundays. At the time, BermudAir founder Adam Scott described Bradley as “a perfect market” due to the significant population of Bermudians in the Hartford area and the route’s appeal to leisure travelers.

BermudAir’s exit follows the recent departures of Avelo Airlines and Spirit Airlines from Bradley. Avelo announced its decision to leave the airport earlier this year, canceling Connecticut’s only nonstop service to Montego Bay, Jamaica, in a move that drew sharp criticism from airport officials who accused the carrier of dodging its financial obligations. Spirit Airlines ended service at Bradley on Oct. 31 amid its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in less than a year.

The Connecticut Airport Authority has disputed claims from departing airlines about insufficient demand, citing strong ridership on the canceled routes. Airport officials have pointed to Bradley’s competitive operating costs and strategic location as advantages for carriers.

“With its low operating costs and robust market, Bradley International Airport offers substantial opportunities to current and potential airlines, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to growing the airport’s route network with destinations important to our community,” the airport authority said Tuesday.

BermudAir serves destinations including Baltimore; Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida; Boston; White Plains, New York; and Toronto and Halifax, Canada from Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport.
