Berlin-based Midsun Specialty Products, which manufacturers silicone tapes, said it has developed a new product that detects hydrogen leaks.
DetecTape, developed in conjunction with Colorado-based Element One Inc., is aimed at the fuel cell, generation, storage and transmission sectors. It contains a color-changing pigment that changes color from light grey to black when it comes into contact with hydrogen.
Midsun said the tape can expedite leak detection from valves, joints, seams and other connections.
The product is undergoing field trials at several facilities and is also being tested by the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the companies said.
