Benchmark Senior Living acquires CT assisted living and memory care facility

Benchmark Senior Living has acquired Church Hill Village, a 71-unit assisted living and memory care facility in Newtown, the company announced Monday.

The Massachusetts-based senior living provider completed the acquisition through a joint venture with National Development, a Newton, Massachusetts real estate firm. Webster Bank provided financing for the deal, though financial terms were not disclosed.

The facility, now renamed Benchmark at Newtown, is located at 2 The Boulevard near the intersection of Interstate 84 and Route 6. The property features assisted living and memory care services across four connected residential neighborhoods.

This marks Benchmark’s 21st community in Connecticut and expands the company’s presence in Fairfield County, where it already operates nine facilities. The acquisition continues a recent partnership between Benchmark and National Development, which have inked similar deals in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, and Smithtown, New York.

“Church Hill Village has built an excellent reputation over the past five years,” said Tom Grape, Benchmark’s founder, chairman and CEO.

The company said it will maintain operations at the facility.

The Newtown facility offers dining venues, a creative studio, entertainment room, hair salon and physical therapy room. Outdoor amenities include courtyards with a putting green, life-size chess board and fireplace areas.

National Development has been involved in senior housing for three decades, having developed or invested in more than 33 communities. The firm manages over $6 billion in assets across the Northeast.

Benchmark operates 68 communities across the Northeast, providing independent living, assisted living, memory care, respite care and skilled nursing services. The company was founded in 1997 and is based in Waltham, Massachusetts.

The acquisition reflects continued consolidation in the senior living industry as companies seek to expand their geographic footprint and service offerings to meet growing demand from aging populations.

In January, the state’s largest senior living and healthcare provider, Masonicare, completed a significant merger with United Methodist Homes and acquired Atria Greenridge Place in Rocky Hill. United Methodist Homes also operates communities in Shelton, Farmington and Newington.
