Beach cities beckon with new Avelo flights to Melbourne, Daytona

Travelers from Tweed New Haven Airport can opt for two new beachy Florida destinations starting in June – Avelo Airlines announced routes to Daytona Beach and Melbourne on Thursday.

Twice weekly service to Melbourne Orlando International Airport is slated to start June 21, with flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Daytona Beach International Airport flights are set to start June 22, with service on Thursdays and Sundays.

Avelo’s flights will be the first nonstops to the two East Coast destinations from Connecticut, according to a company statement. The two new routes make for a total of 17 nonstop destinations served by Avelo from Tweed, eight of them in Florida.

Tweed New Haven Executive Director Tom Rafter said, “We’re excited to have Avelo add these new destinations and glad to see their continued commitment to our region.”

Airport operator Avports presented its case for a $100 million expansion of Tweed at a public event on April 1, with the comment period on a draft FAA report on the plan set to end on May 1.

Avelo recently marked its one millionth passenger at Tweed after launching service in 2021. The airline’s 600,000 passengers in its first full year at Tweed represent a 1,400% increase over the airport’s 2019 pre-pandemic passenger load.
