Connecticut’s real GDP rose 2.7% in 2023, slightly below the national state average of 2.9%, according to new data released by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) Wednesday.
Connecticut saw growth of 3.4% and 3.5% in 2022 and 2021, respectively, according to the BEA.
Middlesex County’s economy grew the fastest in the state in 2023, with a 4.5% increase in real GDP from the year prior.
Windham County saw the second-highest growth, with a 4.2% increase in GDP.
Of Connecticut’s eight counties, Litchfield experienced the least growth, with a 0.7% uptick in real GDP in 2023. In 2021, Litchfield County’s real GDP rose 9.1% – the highest in the state.
The second-slowest growth in 2023 occurred in Tolland County, where real GDP rose 0.9%.
In Fairfield County, real GDP rose 3.7% in 2023; in Hartford County, 2.1%; in New Haven, 2%; and in New London, 3.5%.
Nationally, real GDP increased in 2,357 counties, decreased in 734 counties and was unchanged in 23 counties in 2023, according to the BEA.
GDP is the value of final goods and services produced within a county.
