The University of St. Joseph (USJ) has named Stanley F. Battle founding director of the school’s new master’s degree program in social work, which will be offered starting in the summer of 2014.
In his new role, Battle will provide vision and leadership in developing and implementing the new program, which will prepare social workers for community-based clinical practice in labor force shortage areas such as health and mental health and children and family services.
 Battle has extensive experience in higher education administration, having served as interim president of Southern Connecticut State University from 2010 to 2012. He was also previously chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C.  and president of Coppin State University in Baltimore.
 Battle earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Springfield College and several graduate degrees including a Ph.D. in social welfare policy from the University of Pittsburgh.Â
