Bank of America awards $200,000 grants to two Hartford nonprofits

A nonprofit that helps people transitioning from life in the criminal justice system, Community Partners in Action, is among two local recipients of a $200,000 grant from Bank of America.

The award was announced at an event at Hartford’s Parkville Market on Nov. 9.

In addition, reSET, a local nonprofit that helps entrepreneurs and supports early-stage businesses with an emphasis on women; black, indigenous and people of color; and low-income entrepreneurs, received a separate $200,000 award from the bank.

Since it began in 2004, Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders program has awarded grants to 62 nonprofits in Connecticut, and more than 30 in Hartford.

“Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders program is unique in addressing local organizations’ short-term needs as well as long-term sustainability in order to create lasting change in communities,” said Joe Gianni, president of Bank of America’s local market.

Community Partners in Action said it plans to use the funds to expand its capacity to work with participants who come through the Hartford Reentry Welcome Center, focusing on providing temporary housing, including sober houses, room shares, economy hotels, and helping to pay for security deposits and rent.

Research has shown that having stable housing reduces the risk of recidivism and enhances public safety, the group said.
