Bank America’s new downtown Hartford digs

Bank of America has officially moved its Connecticut headquarters, relocating its downtown Hartford employees to two nearby locations and cutting its overall lease holdings in the central business district by about half. No jobs were shed in the move.

The expected move, first reported by the Hartford Business Journal last year, took place Friday with the company exiting its 210,000 square feet of space at 777 Main St. and moving most of its business operations to the CityPlace office tower on Asylum Ave., said T.J. Crawford, a Bank of America spokesman.

The Charlotte, N.C., bank occupies 67,000 square feet in CityPlace and already has 33,000 square feet of space in the connecting CityPlace II tower.

Crawford said Bank of America has also opened a 6,500 square foot full service branch in State House Square, which replaced the bank’s 19,000 square foot banking center in 777 Main St. The bank also shut its adjoining outdoor ATM kiosk, next door to 100 Pearl St.

Crawford said the bank’s lease in 777 Main St. expires at week’s end. In all, the move means Bank of America has shed more than 100,000 square feet of space downtown. Crawford said a significant portion of the bank’s holdings in 777 Main St. was unused space.

No Connecticut jobs were lost during the move, although some employees were shifted out of downtown to nearby branches in East Hartford and Glastonbury, Crawford said.

“No jobs have left the state or Hartford County,” Crawford said.
