An immature bald eagle was shot and killed in Rocky Hill earlier this month, and authorities are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the people responsible.
On Dec. 13, a citizen reported a dead bald eagle on Great Meadow Road in Rocky Hill, near the Connecticut River. The bird was sent to the National Fish and Wildlife Forensics Laboratory in Oregon, which determined it died of a gunshot.
Bald and golden eagles are protected under federal law by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The bald eagle also is listed as a threatened species under Connecticut’s Endangered Species Act.
The Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services are jointly investigating the crime. The $5,000 reward is being offered by the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust.
