Backus nurses to hold union vote Wednesday

About 425 nurses at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich are expected to hold a union election Wednesday, the Norwich Bulletin reports.

The vote will determine if the majority of the hospital’s nursing staff will affiliate with the American Federation of Teacher in Connecticut.

If approved by the nurses, the union would become the second collective bargaining unit at Backus, which operated for most of its 118 years without a union.

Nurses represent the largest bloc of employees at the Norwich-based hospital. A majority of the people casting ballots in the affirmative is required for the union to be approved, said John Cotter, deputy Eastern director of the National Labor Relations Board in Hartford.
