Backus Hospital union efforts create rift

Tensions are on the rise at The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich as a group of nurses at the hospital attempt to unionize, the New London Day reports.

For the first time in the hospital’s 117-year history, a union now exists among one group of employees – about three dozen security workers, shuttle drivers and other support service staff – and a second unionizing effort became public this month among the 480 registered nurses, the largest employee group.

Late Thursday, the union, AFT Connecticut, announced it had filed unfair labor practice charges against the hospital for surveillance and intimidation of unionizing activities.
