Axe-throwing entertainment venue proposed for Chapel Street

New Haven may soon offer a different form of entertainment – one that offers both competition and a way to relieve stress.

The New Haven Experience Co. LLC proposes to open a Pine & Iron Axe Throwing business in storefront space at 770 Chapel St.

In order to proceed, the company needs special exceptions from zoning officials — for an indoor amusement use and to allow liquor service in a non-restaurant facility. The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals is hosting a public hearing on the application on Tuesday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Mitchell Hall of Records, 200 Orange St.

Pine & Iron Axe Throwing currently has a venue on Park Street in Hartford. At that location, guests can book hour-long sessions, which include an introduction, coaching, axe throwing and a group photo.

Attorney James Perito of Halloran Sage in New Haven is representing the New Haven Experience Co. before zoning officials.

“[The applicant] believes a similar facility in New Haven will provide a new amusement to complement the multitude of cultural amenities of New Haven,” Perito wrote in the application.

According to Perito, the business provides its customers with the “exhilarating experience” of throwing axes at wooden targets.

The company proposes to renovate the first floor of the Chapel Street location, which is across the street from Elm City Market. While the first floor is currently vacant, the building has occupied offices on higher floors.

The space had most recently been occupied by SportsPark, a retail store. The New Haven business would feature 10 throwing lanes, a bar, a lounge with an arcade and board games, a private throwing room and workshop.

The company plans to have both regular hours and days reserved for private bookings. From Wednesday to Thursday, it would be open from 5 to 10 p.m., and on Friday from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday hours would be from noon to midnight, and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays would be available for private events, according to the application.
