Avon’s Magellan unit offers radiation app

Editor’s Note: An earlier version incorrectly identified National Imaging Associates as an operator of imaging clinics.

Worried all those X-ray scans will zap you with an overdose of radiation? Avon’s Magellan Health Services now has a phone app to help ease your mind.

Magellan’s National Imaging Associates division, a leading radiology benefits manager throughout Connecticut and the country, announced Wednesday its proprietary iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad application for measuring radiation dosages.

National Imaging spokesman Chris Pearsall said in an e-mail Wednesday that to the company’s knowledge it is the first to offer this kind of mobile tool.

The free online tool can be found at www.RadiationCalculator.com or downloaded from Apple’s App Store.

The app is a response to the expanding use of X-rays and other imaging technology to peer inside the human body and the associated concerns patients have about potentially harmful overexposure, said National Imaging CEO Tina Blasi.

“Radiation safety is our first concern, and the Radiation Calculator tools reflect our commitment to ensuring consumers have a way to measure and understand radiation exposure,” Blasi said in a statement.

Next up: A Facebook app version of its Radiation Calculator, the company says.
