The Avon Old Farms School has installed a 205-kilowatt solar electric system, billed as the largest operating solar array of any private school in New England.
Located on the roof of the Jennings Fairchild Ice Rink, the solar panels power much of the core campus buildings. The system will cut the school’s carbon dioxide emissions by 6.3 million pounds — equal to planting 30,000 trees — over the unit’s 25-year life.
It also will cut the school’s electric bill by about a third, the school said.
The solar system was installed by Wilton-based Alteris Renewables, with an undisclosed amount of financing by the panels’ third-party owner, EOS Venture of Massachusetts.
The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund in Rocky Hill also provided project financing.
