Avelo starts nonstop service to Chicago

Avelo Airlines on Thursday began providing nonstop service from Tweed-New Haven Airport to Chicago Midway International Airport.

Avelo Chairman and CEO Andrew Levy said the company is “excited to connect these two pizza capitals.”

The Chicago-New Haven route will typically be available four days per week. Introductory one-way fares start at $89, according to an announcement.

“Getting from the Windy City to southern Connecticut is now easier and more affordable than ever,” Levy said.

The company anticipates that the route will attract business people and tourists, particularly those interested in getaways to New York and New England. New Haven itself, with attractions such as Yale University, dining and shopping, is also expected to be a draw for travelers. Chicago has attractions such as Navy Pier, and the city is known for its museums and restaurants.

Tweed-New Haven Airport Executive Director Sean Scanlon called the addition of flights to Chicago another important milestone.

“Starting this week, we now serve thirteen destinations and are offering service to major business hubs for the first time since the 1990s,” Scanlon said.

Tweed also has flights to Baltimore/Washington D.C., Nashville, Raleigh/Durham, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Savannah/Hilton Head, along with six locations in Florida: Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota/Bradenton, Fort Myers, West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.
