Avelo restarts most Florida flights, braces for Carolina impact

Avelo Airlines’ operations from New Haven’s Tweed Airport to Florida have mostly returned to normal – although the airport serving devastated Fort Myers remains closed until further notice.

Southwest Florida International Airport, located in Fort Myers and serving Florida’s Gulf Coast, remains without power and water in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian and is open only to emergency personnel and humanitarian flights, according to local media reports.

In total, only seven flights were canceled on Friday out of 24 scheduled into and out of New Haven, according to Avelo spokesperson Jim Olson.

Passengers on canceled flights can get a full refund, Olson said. Avelo is still also offering passengers the option of changing flight dates to hurricane-impacted destinations at no cost at its website, aveloair.com.

Flights to Charleston, S.C., and Wilmington, N.C. – areas in Hurricane Ian’s path this weekend – that are scheduled through Sunday are also eligible for rebooking. Charleston International Airport closed down early Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday in advance of Ian’s landfall.
