Avelo Airlines cancels most New Haven-to-Florida flights ahead of hurricane

Avelo Airlines, which has its East Coast base at New Haven’s Tweed airport, has canceled multiple flights to Florida ahead of the landfall of Hurricane Ian on Wednesday, according to a company spokesperson.

“We have been preemptively canceling flights operating between Tweed and four of our Florida destinations – Tampa, Orlando, Sarasota and Fort Myers,” Avelo spokesman Jim Olson said. “We have been communicating directly with our customers that they have the option of receiving a full refund or changing their dates of travel at no extra cost.”

A total of 12 Avelo flights were canceled for the three-day period starting Wednesday – one on Wednesday, 10 on Thursday and one on Friday. Most flights are expected to come back online Friday, Olson said, with the schedule expected to be fully back to normal on Saturday.

Avelo, which launched service from Tweed on Nov. 3 last year, flies to six Florida airports and has been alerting all travelers to the Sunshine State this week that they can change their flights dates at no cost. Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach are the airline’s two other Florida destinations.

Avelo is asking travelers to call (346) 616-9500 to change their flights.

Avelo has transported more than 250,000 passengers to and from New Haven since it started operations at Tweed last year. The airline’s success helped prompt the airport authority to move forward with expansion plans to add another terminal to allow for additional capacity, despite opposition from some neighbors.
