The Avangrid Foundation, based in Orange, invested more than $3 million in grants, scholarships and matching gift programs around the country last year.
The amount represents an increase from the previous year, as the foundation said it gave out approximately $2.5 million to support charitable efforts in 2018.
Avangrid is an energy company, while the Avangrid Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization that funds philanthropic activities in communities where Avangrid does business.

Foundation President Jim Torgerson said the group works to promote healthier, more sustainable communities.Â
Beneficiaries included an array of charitable organizations, including food banks nationwide. The Elm City Robo Squad, a robotics competition program, and Evolutions, an after-school program at Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History, are also examples of recipients. The foundation sought input from Avangrid employees on what organizations should receive grants, and the New Haven Pride Center and Clifford Beers, a mental health care agency, were among those picked.
