Auditors critical of CHRO reporting

The state auditors are critical of the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities for failing to accurately report open caseloads, as well as provide assessments within statutory timeframes.

The commission blames it on inadequate technology when it comes to reporting open caseloads. Not meeting statutory deadlines for reviews, it added, could be blamed on staffing cuts.

The audit says as of May 5, 2015, CHRO had 2,478 cases open, with the oldest cases going back to March 7, 1995, with 30 percent of its cases more than a year old. CHRO said it has implemented new technology as of May 12, 2015, that will accurately reflect the outstanding complaints. The commission said it had lacked the proper software since 2009.

The audit covered CHRO for the fiscal years ending in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
