Attorney John S. Murtha mourned

Long-time Connecticut attorney John S. Murtha, a founding member of Hartford law firm Murtha Cullina, died Thursday.  He was 98.

Murtha joined the firm in 1938, and became one of the leaders of what was decades later known as Murtha, Cullina, Richter and Pinney.

He received his degree from Yale Law School in 1935 and was admitted to the Connecticut bar

in 1938. He joined the Navy in 1943 where he was stationed in the Mediterranean as a commanding officer and in the Pacific as executive officer and commanding officer.

Upon his return 1946, he served as assistant state’s attorney for Hartford County until 1951.

Murtha served on various boards and panels, including Kaman Corp., Mt. Sinai Hospital, Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation, Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford and American Red Cross Greater Hartford Chapter.
