AT&T Donates $1.6 Million In Connecticut In 2008

AT&T recently announced that it contributed more than $1.6 million to key initiatives in Connecticut during 2008.

In its Citizenship and Sustainability Report released recently, AT&T spotlights more than $865 million in multi-year investments for important education, environmental and volunteerism programs to help strengthen communities, stimulate economic growth and ensure America’s global competitiveness. This includes significant education and volunteerism investments in Connecticut.

Girl Scouts of Connecticut will be able to serve more girls living in economically challenged areas of Hartford thanks to a grant of $10,000 from the Lincoln Financial Foundation. Girl Scouts of Connecticut is committed to bringing the benefits of Girl Scouting to all girls. However, many girls in these areas are often unable to participate in traditional troops, so Girl Scouts of Connecticut has expanded participation options to meet their needs. As part of this program, the Lincoln Foundation grant will help to fund the Girl Scouts’ Leadership Journeys program to Hartford girls in grades 4 and 5 beginning next month.

Timothy Goodwin of Torrington has been named executive director of the newly formed Community Farm of Simsbury (CFS), according to Bessie Speers, chair of the CFS board and head of The Ethel Walker School, a key collaborator in this farm-based education and outreach project. Goodwin, the former executive director of The Hartford Youth Scholars Foundation (HYSF), was appointed to that position by Mayor Eddie Perez. Goodwin brings to the CFS an extensive background in nonprofit leadership and education. Having grown up on a family farm in Litchfield, he has a lifelong interest in sustainable agriculture. During his tenure at HYSF, he worked closely with community-based organizations, corporate funders, Connecticut public and independent schools and regional foundations to develop and implement specialized academic programs.

The Jason Karp family of Greenwich and Wilson Tennis were sponsors, along with presenting sponsor Lexus, of the first Max Classic Tennis Tournament at Tumble Brook Country Club in Bloomfield. Held on the same day as the Max Golf Classic, which featured over 200 golfers, the tournament helped raise $260,000 for the Arthritis Foundation, Northern & Southern New England Chapter.

The South Windsor Chamber of Commerce presents its annual vehicle raffle for a grand prize: a 2009 BMW 128i. The drawing will be held at Maneeley’s Banquet Facility & Catering on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. during the South Windsor Chamber of Commerce “Booming Business Expo.” Only 350 tickets will be sold with one winner selected. The Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation Inc. announced that W. Keith Wuerthner of Farmington has joined its board of directors as New England Lions Club representative. He will serve a two-year term. Wuerthner is a professional communicator and public relations specialist, having worked in the newspaper, defense and manufacturing industries. He retired in 2004 from the state of Connecticut Board of Education and Services for the Blind.
