Army Corps to repair Stonington breakwater

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to repair the half-mile breakwater in Stonington Harbor that was damaged last summer when Tropical Storm Irene brought large waves ashore, The Associated Press reports.

The Day of New London reports the Corps intends to add nearly 3,000 tons of new stone to the 108-year-old east breakwater that protects the harbor. Work is expected to begin in the fall and take two to four months to finish.

The federal government will be paying the $500,000 to $1 million cost of the project. The last time the breakwater was repaired was in 1958 when 4,000 tons of stone were replaced.

The Army Corps is taking public comments on the project and consulting with other agencies to make sure it won’t harm wildlife or the environment.
