Area firms leading way in technology

While three-quarters of the companies making the Tech Council’s list of the state’s 40 fastest growing tech companies hail from the state’s southern tier, the biggest winners at the Marcum Top 40 awards celebration Sept. 27 were from Central Connecticut.

Tolland-based OpenSky Corp. posted the largest revenue growth of any company represented — 18,221 percent over the past four years. The company provides professional services in IT consulting, infrastructure, risk management, security and virtualization.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals’ Soliris drug catapulted the Cheshire company to the top of the Tech Top 40 the past two years. Alexion, which repeated as champ of the life sciences division, is expanding its reach into additional treatment areas.

RSL Fiber Systems is a repeat category winner in the advanced manufacturing category. The East Hartford company manufactures advanced lighting solutions and integrated illumination for coal mining, refineries, offshore rigs, first responders, military and other applications.

And STR Holdings won in the Energy/Environmental Technologies.

Other category winners were HealthPlanOne LLC of Shelton, a repeat winner in the new media/internet/telecom technology category. The company is a web-based health insurance brokerage focused on marketing individual/family and small business health insurance. And Higher One Holdings Inc. won in the software division. The New Haven company, which went public last year, provides electronic payment and disbursement services for colleges and universities and their students.
