Eversource Energy’s sale of its water utility, Aquarion Water Co., is scheduled to close Tuesday, June 30 — the first time the parties have publicly committed to a specific date for the long-delayed transaction.
Aquarion, the state’s largest water utility serving 735,000 customers across 60 municipalities, is being sold by Eversource to the Aquarion Water Authority, a quasi-public nonprofit.
The date was disclosed in a June 23 letter to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority from Aquarion’s legal counsel, New Britain-based Keegan Werlin LLP.
That same day, PURA approved a pending regulatory motion governing Aquarion’s return of roughly $5.6 million in revenues held in escrow since 2023 under a Superior Court order.
PURA’s ruling requires those funds — plus roughly $200,000 in accrued interest — to be deposited into the Aquarion Water Authority’s Rate Stabilization Fund, with customers receiving a one-time bill credit within 30 days of closing.
Separately, the towns of Westport, Fairfield, New Canaan and Ridgefield, along with two regional councils of governments,
withdrew their pending appeal before the state Appellate Court on June 22.
The appeal became moot after PURA’s March 25
final decision approving the sale.
Aquarion has said it will
withdraw its pending rate case from PURA’s docket on July 1, the day after closing.
The sale was delayed by PURA’s
initial denial in November 2025.
