Developer Nancy Greenberg and city officials broke ground Wednesday on a new 42-unit apartment complex at 703 Whitney Ave., the former local headquarters of the American Red Cross.
Construction is underway on a 37,000-square-foot building facing Whitney Avenue on a spot once home to a parking lot. The four-story modernist structure designed by GLUCK+ Architects will house 35 apartments with a common area on the roof. EIghteen of the apartments will be two-bedroom units, with 23 one-bedrooms and one caretaker unit.
Seven units will be built inside the original 1902 house on the site with one- and two-bedroom layouts with private yards and fireplaces in some units.
Greenberg bought the 1.3-acre property for $1.6 million in 2016 and was awarded approval from the New Haven Planning & Zoning Commission in April 2017 to go ahead with construction of the market-rate apartments.
The original structure on the site was built in 1902 and used by the Red Cross for 50 years. A carriage house also stands on the rear of the property and will be incorporated into the new development for use as meeting space, a fitness center, small offices and storage space.Â
