American Savings Foundation CEO Honored as Afterschool Champion

The Afterschool Alliance honored David Davison, president and CEO of the American Savings Foundation in New Britain, for his support for afterschool programs at the “Breakfast of Champions,” a gala event in Washington, D.C. Davison was one of just 10 individuals from around the country honored for supporting and working on behalf of the afterschool programs. The Connecticut After School Network nominated him for the honor. Davison’s career began at the Hamilton Madison House Settlement on the Lower East Side of New York where he spent seven years working in community-based programs for children, youth and families. While on the national staff of Boys and Girls Clubs of America, he created and directed a nationwide drug prevention and education program. He later served as assistant national executive director for development for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America.

Freshplace, a new initiative addressing hunger in one of Hartford’s poorest neighborhoods, has been awarded grant funding to evaluate the impact of its innovative approach. Freshplace is a collaborative project between Chrysalis Center Inc., the Junior League of Hartford Inc. and Foodshare. The new food pantry, to open in summer 2010, will provide fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, meat and staple items to low-income individuals and families in Hartford’s Upper Albany neighborhood. Unlike traditional food pantries, in addition to food, Freshplace patrons will receive personalized services including budget coaching and nutrition education, as well as referrals to additional community supports. With help from Freshplace staff, participants will develop individualized Freshstart plans to address the root causes of their need for hunger relief.
