With United Healthcare slated to appeal a preliminary injunction of its cuts to its Connecticut Medicare Advantage Provider network, the American Medical Association has lent its support to the doctors.
The AMA, along with more than 30 smaller medical associations, signed onto a brief led by the Connecticut State Medical Society urging a U.S. Court of Appeals judge to uphold the preliminary injunction a Connecticut district judge granted Dec. 5.
The appeals court is scheduled to hear arguments today from attorneys for United Health as well as the plaintiffs — Fairfield County Medical Association and Hartford County Medical Association.
The AMA said it’s gathering information from state medical societies to provide federal Medicare regulators evidence that the doctor terminations will hurt patient care.
Jessica Pappas, a spokeswoman for United Healthcare, said the insurer was pleased the court chose to expedite its review of the preliminary injunction.
“We continue to believe that these changes will bring better health outcomes and more affordable health care coverage to our members,” she said.
Correction: The original version of this story incorrectly stated which organization filed a brief asking the court to uphold the injunction. The Connecticut State Medical Society filed the brief.
