American Airlines to resume service at Tweed

American Airlines will start providing daily commercial air service again from Tweed-New Haven Airport in the new year.

Tweed officials indicated Tuesday that American will again offer flights between New Haven and Philadelphia starting on Jan. 5.

Tweed-New Haven Executive Director Sean Scanlon said he is excited to welcome American Airlines back to New Haven.

“2020 has been a challenging year for aviation, but we are confident that good things are ahead for both Tweed and air travel in 2021,” Scanlon said in an announcement.  “We look forward to working with our partners at American to meet the needs of our passengers as they begin to travel once again.”

Customers can begin buying tickets on Sunday, Dec. 27.

“The greatest thing we offer here at Tweed is convenience, and our small size means that you can literally park your car, get through security and be sitting at your gate within the span of a few steps and minutes,” Scanlon said.

American Airlines had suspended service in the fall to multiple airports because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and low demand for air travel.

American Airlines has been Tweed’s sole commercial carrier, and Tweed has been advertising that passengers can fly from Tweed to Philadelphia International Airport, then to any destination in the world served by American. Once in Philadelphia, passengers can connect to over 70 destinations.
