Amazon ends Bristol delivery partnership, 53 layoffs imminent

Amazon is cutting ties with one of its small business delivery partners in Bristol, resulting in 53 layoffs this fall, a state labor filing shows.

Mass.-based Systemize Logistics LLC in a letter to the state Department of Labor (DOL) last week said Amazon is not renewing its delivery contract at the e-commerce giant’s delivery center at 71 Horizon Dr. Systemize Logistics, a third-party supply chain providing warehousing and so-called “last mile delivery,” will cease operations there Sept. 29, officials say.

All 51 drivers and two dispatchers being terminated have been notified about the permanent closure, the letter adds.

An Amazon spokesperson in a statement Monday said they are helping all impacted drivers find positions with other company delivery partners “with little to no disruption to pay.”

“We work with a variety of carrier partners to get packages to Amazon customers and we regularly evaluate our partnerships,” the spokesperson said.

Systemize Logistics’ departure at the Bristol delivery station comes less than a year after another Boston-based courier closed its doors at the total 60,300-square-foot industrial building. That closure was expected to result in 74 layoffs.

Amazon opened the delivery operation in Aug. 2018, promising to bring roughly 180 workers to the 30-year-old warehouse. Company officials did not disclose how many delivery partners, or employees, are currently operating at the facility.

Mayor Ellen Zoppo-Sassu in a statement Tuesday afternoon said the Amazon delivery station collaborates with likely dozens of partners.

“We encourage those affected by the layoff to take advantage of the local branch of the American Jobs Center for reemployment assistance,” Zoppo-Sassu said.
