The Hartford region's leading community hope chest says last year it dispensed a record $34.5 million via a record number of grants to needy individuals and the organizations that serve them.
The nonprofit Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, serving 29 Greater Hartford communities, said it ended 2017 with an unaudited $1.04 billion in assets in 1,208 funds.
In 2016, the Foundation issued 2,287 grants totaling more than $33.3 million.
It said it also received 1,918 individual gifts last year — most in its history — totaling $16.7 million, and opened 55 new funds.
“At a time when our state and many of our communities face significant fiscal challenges, the Hartford Foundation was able once again to award a record-breaking 2,385 grants,'' said Foundation President Jay Williams.
Since its founding in 1925, the Foundation says it has awarded more than $720 million in grants.
