The Hartford Preservation Alliance recently presented its 2008 awards for exceptional contributions to historic preservation. Awards honoring those who have brought vacant Hartford buildings back to life were presented to Belden Development, Lewis Street Partners, Community Renewal Team Inc., Melville Charitable Trust and developer Ruth Harvey. Hartford residents Jennifer Cassidy and Jerry and Gail Powell also were honored for the historic renovations completed on their homes. In addition, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and The Mark Twain House and Museum were recognized for museum-quality restorations.
Kitchen & Bath Design Consultants in West Hartford collected 87 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, an organization that collects and distributes shoes worldwide. Shoes have been distributed from the organization to more than 60 countries including Mexico, Honduras, Romania, Thailand and the Sudan.
The TD Banknorth Charitable Foundation in New Britain donated a total of $166,000 in grants to several organizations in the state, including: University of Hartford’s Educational Main Street academy in Hartford, $2,500; the Boys & Girls Club and Family Center of Bristol Power Hour After School homework assistance program, $3,000; the Village for Families & Children Inc. Rambuh Early Learning Center programs in Hartford, $5,000; the Hartford Economic Development Corp.’s economic development and job growth programs in Hartford, $5,000; and the Connecticut Housing Coalition in Hartford, $10,000.
My Sisters’ Place Inc. in Hartford received a $10,000 donation from the Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage Cares foundation. The funds will be used to help the organization in its mission to end homelessness.
The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation awarded a $12,500 grant to the First Church of Christ, Congregational in Glastonbury. The funds will assist in feasibility and adaptive reuse planning for the Thomas Hale House and site in the town’s historic district.
The American Cancer Society’s Camp Rising Sun in Meriden celebrated its 25th anniversary in the summer of 2008. The camp provides kids suffering from cancer with free summer camp experiences.
