All Rugged Bear stores, including CT, closing

Rugged Bear infant- and children’s-wear stores in West Hartford Center and Canton are among nine Connecticut stores and 39 total the bankrupt Northeast children’s clothing chain is closing for good after more than 30 years in business.

All stores, including ones at 977 Farmington Ave. in West Hartford and 110 Albany Turnpike in Canton, will begin Friday going-out-of-business liquidation sales, the Boston retailer announced Thursday.

The Boston area-based chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in Massachusetts on Wednesday.

Locations will remain open until merchandise is sold, the Boston area-based chain said.

The seven other Connecticut stores are in Darien, Fairfield, Greenwich, New Canaan, Old Saybrook, Ridgefield and Westport. The rest are in New York, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire.

Veteran retail liquidators Gordon Brothers Group will oversee the closing sales.

All Rugged Bear stores will honor gift cards, merchandise credits and membership program benefits through the duration of the sale. All sales made on or after March 4, 2011 are final.

Returns on purchases made prior to Friday will be accepted based on the chain’s return policy in effect on the date of purchase.

Rugged Bear was founded in 1980 and expanded their stores across New England, New York and New Jersey.
