Alexion adds scholarships/HARC honors couple

Alexion adds scholarships

Alexion Pharmaceuticals is partnering with the Connecticut Community Foundation to award scholarships to eight Waterbury high school graduates with an interest in studying the life sciences or chemistry.

The 2011 Alexion Scholars were selected by their high school principals, based on factors that include their academic achievement and career plans. Each 2011 Alexion Scholar will receive $4,000, paid over the four years of his/her undergraduate studies. In total, the Alexion Scholarship Fund, at the Connecticut Community Foundation, is now supporting the educational goals of 16 Alexion Scholars.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in Cheshire, is a biopharmaceutical company focused on serving patients with severe and ultra-rare disorders through the innovation, development and commercialization of therapeutic products.

HARC honors couple

HARC Inc. recently honored Kathy and Jim Heffernan of Wethersfield for their lifetime of dedicated service to people with intellectual disability and to HARC.

Honoring the Heffernan’s was Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, who spoke of their dedication as loving parents to their son Brian, a HARC client, who passed away several years ago. She also spoke of the Heffernan’s’ dedication to helping people with intellectual disability, through service to HARC and as ambassadors and advocates at the Connecticut General Assembly and with legislators and other governmental officials.

Kathy Heffernan presented The JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) of Wethersfield High School with HARC’s Youth Community Services Award for their award winning inventions that help people with multiple disabilities.

HARC, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with intellectual disability and their families, is a Community Investment Partner of United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and serves Greater Hartford.
