Alert CT hospitals save $30M in payments

Connecticut leaders are hailing a federal agency’s correction of a Medicare/Medicaid payment error that could have cost state hospitals and other care providers some $30 million in reimbursements.

The state’s hospital lobby flagged the error to Connecticut authorities, who then asked the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMMS) to reevaluate its proposed payment calculations for the current fiscal 2012 period, officials said.

As a result, CMMS acknowledged the error and issued a corrected payment rule. The correction also affects 104 care providers across the U.S., authorities say.

Congressman Joe Courtney said he is especially relieved that the correction means Windham Hospital in his second district won’t suffer a debilitating $6.15 million loss in revenue.

“If left uncorrected, this anomaly would have particularly hit Windham Hospital the hardest,” the Democrat said in a statement.

Congressmen Rosa DeLauro, D-3rd District, and John Larson, D-1st District, say their care-provider constituents also would have been hurt if the payment error had been allowed to stand.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy also hailed his fellow Democrats for their intervention.
