Albertus Magnus College in New Haven cut the ribbon Thursday on a new solar power system that is expected to offset 30 percent of the college’s annual electricity consumption.
Stamford-based Green Street Power Partners LLC. installed Phase I of the system, a 770-kilowatt photovoltaic solar power grid built into carports located on parking lots across the college’s campus. The “solar carports” will shelter vehicles as well as generate electricity.
“It’s evident that Albertus Magnus College has a forward-thinking mindset to create a sustainable future for their campus,” said Green Street Power Partners CEO Scott Kerner. “We are proud to be Albertus Magnus’ chosen solar partner as they bring renewable energy to their school.” Shawmut, Swinerton Renewable Energy and Avangrid also participated in the Albertus Magnus solar project.
The 770-kW solar system is projected to produce approximately 923,940 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, offsetting the greenhouse gases produced by about 147 vehicles a year or preserving 140 acres of forest over the lifetime of the system.
The college will purchase the electricity at a competitive fixed rate under a 25-year power-purchase agreement. In addition to the solar carports, Albertus Magnus has begun planning an approximately 228-kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic array on the campus athletic center, expected to offset an additional 10 percent of the college’s electricity use.
