Air Force hands Kaman $36M fuze order

Kaman Corp. says resumption of production and delivery of bomb fuzes to the Air Force has resulted in an additional $36 million fuze order from the Bloomfield aerospace-industrial firm.

Kaman said production of some 2,000 fuzes per month resumed in August in Middletown and Orlando, Fla., following a two-month delay to fix problems with a supplied fuze component. Restarting production allowed the company to meet its third-quarter production and delivery quota, officials said.

Kaman says it is the Air Force’s sole fuze supplier. U.S. and allied fighters and bombers rely on the fuzes to arm their weapons loads.

The Air Force exercised its seventh option to order more fuzes, extending Kaman’s production backlog to 2012, said Greg Steiner, president of Kaman Aerospace Corp.

The order also raises to $337.4 million the total value of fuzes Kaman will have supplied since the program began, officials said.
