Stop & Shop New England parent Ahold USA has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding its grocery delivery service, Peapod, the two sides announced.
Under the agreement, which remedies alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Ahold will ensure that the Peapod website and mobile app is accessible to customers with hearing, visual and other disabilities.
Assistive software and displays for the disabled have been available for years, the DOJ said in a statement, but websites must contain programming that allows the devices to interact properly.
The deal requires Ahold to retain a consultant to evaluate its website and apps each year, designate an employee to act as accessibility coordinator, and take other measures to ensure disabled customers have an equal opportunity to shop online for groceries.
Ahold said the agreement does not require it to pay a fine.
