A limited liability company tied to Gene Langan Volkswagen of Glastonbury recently purchased a 1.2-acre property hosting Melzen Pet Supply – which is closing after a century in Glastonbury.
Melzen Family LLC sold 100 Oak Street to GKL Realty LLC in a $1 million deal recorded by the town on Oct. 20. The property includes an 8,800-square-foot store and warehouse building and is located near the dealership on New London Turnpike.
Melzen announced its pending Nov. 12 closure in a Facebook post on Oct. 10, as well as a notice on its website. The Facebook post drew reactions from more than 400 Facebook users and more than 160 comments.
Polish immigrant Stanley Melzen launched the business as Melzen Farm Supply in 1920. The business has moved three times in its history, the last into a newly-constructed, metal-sided building on the Oak Street property in 1980.
Now, the owners of the business are looking forward to retirement “and life’s next chapters,” according to a notice on the store website.
“We are overwhelmed by all of your kind words and support in response to our announcement that we will be closing our doors for the last time on November 12th, 2022,” reads an Oct. 17 Facebook post. “It has been a difficult decision to sell our property and close the business. We are humbly grateful for your support loyalty and friendship over the past 102 years and have been honored to serve your animal needs.”
GKL Realty LLC’s principals are Eugene Langan and the Eugene P. Langan Sr. Revocable Trust, which state records list to a residential property in Glastonbury. Eugene
Langan is also principal of a limited liability company that owns the property hosting his namesake dealership.
Attempts to reach Eugene Langan were not successful.
