A state agency has approved plans to increase the power output at an existing electrical generation plant in Middletown.
The Connecticut Siting Council has approved a joint venture between United Illuminating Co. and NRG Energy. The companies want to develop 200 megawatts of electric generation capacity on the site of an existing power plant.
Pending local approvals, the council’s unanimous vote clears the way for the joint venture company, GenConn Energy, to break ground on the $200 million project in February 2010.
The new generating units, which would be built on the grounds of NRG’s full service 770-megawatt power plant in Middletown, would only run on the hottest and coldest days of the year to meet peak power demand. (AP)
