State Attorney General George Jepsen has asked regulators to reject a proposed 23-percent water rate hike from Aquarion Water Co., his office announced.
Jepsen filed a brief Thursday with the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) arguing Aquarion failed to show the rate is necessary or appropriate.
“Aquarion’s proposed rates far exceed levels that could be considered just and reasonable and are unwarranted at this time,” Jepsen said in a statement.
The water company has requested a rate increase amounting to $27.2 million in one year, followed by additional increases of more than $3 million a year in the following two years.
Aquarion serves 625,000 Connecticut residents, making it the largest water company in the state.
Jepsen said PURA is expected to decide the matter in August.
