After $2M redo, city’s North End senior center reopens

Hartford’s North End Senior Center is open again following an eight-month, $2 million makeover and expansion, officials say.

Mayor Pedro E. Segarra, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and other state, city and local dignitaries were on hand Wednesday to rededicate the facility at 80 Coventry St.

The first major work since it was built in 1991, the center had been closed since October for repairs that included lighting and roof, electrical and plumbing upgrades, new equipment and other interior improvements.

In addition 2,000 square feet was added to the existing 11,000 square feet to accommodate more than 150 seniors who visit weekly for meals from the on-site farmer’s market, physical education, and computer literacy classes.

On July 25, the State Bond Commission approved $100,000 to furnish the facility, the city said.
