Aetna revamps overseas-benefit plans

Hartford managed care provider Aetna Inc. has revamped its international suite of health-benefit products to give employers and their workers greater flexibility in accessing care abroad.

Aetna said its four base plans offer employers an expanded menu of benefits and limits to enable them to offer better care and to manage costs.

The plans are available immediately in Europe, the Middle East and Hong Kong, and will be rolled out over the coming months in China, Jakarta and Singapore, said Donna Otten, head of Aetna Global Benefits in London.

As an example, Aetna said employers taking advantage of this flexibility can provide different benefits for employees working in different regions, such as coverage for traditional Chinese medicine, or extended evacuation assistance for employees who travel more frequently than others. These employees can be covered on an alternate plan design.

The four plans also include new benefits for hospice care; vaccinations and inoculations; emergency travel enabling expatriates to return home should a close family member be taken seriously ill, and, depending on the plan, prosthesis coverage.
