Aetna launches income-replacement plan

Hartford health insurer Aetna said it has launched a plan for employers who want to incentivize injured, ill or pregnant employees to return to work sooner.

The Aetna Abilities plan is designed to reduce the cost of disability insurance.

Under the plan, employees receive a base level of income replacement if they stop working due to one of those conditions. But they would receive a higher incentive if they stick to an individually tailored action plan, which would call for them to stay at work or return to work, depending on the employer’s preferences, Aetna said.

The plan is available to companies with 301 or more covered lives in Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Arizona. Aetna said it intends to offer the plan in more states in the coming months.
