Aetna incentivizing doctors to go electronic

Hartford health care provider Aetna Inc. said Thursday it will pay its network doctors to develop equipment to create and maintain electronic versions of patients’ medical records.

Launched by Aetna in 2008, electronic health records enable patients to view and update their medical records, making it easier for multiple care providers to understand medical histories.

“The appropriate exchange of health information across our system through health information technology can improve coordination of care and facilitate a collaborative approach to keeping patients healthier. But we need to do more,” said Aetna Chief Medical Officer, Lonny Reisman, in a statement. “The public and private sectors need to put the necessary focus on building the electronic health care platform of the future.”
