Aetna grant to support Chicago care access

Hartford-based Aetna Foundation awarded a $300,000 grant to Northwestern University’s Chicago medical school for research and community outreach to improve that city’s equal access to health care.

Foundation President Anne Beal, M.D., announced the grant Thursday during her visiting professorship to the Center for Healthcare Equity at the Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine

“Research shows that, unfortunately, racial and ethnic health disparities exist in Chicago,” Beal said in a statement. “Through this and other grants, we are trying to do our part to promote health equity here.”

In 2009, Aetna and its foundation gave more than $450,000 in grants and sponsorships to nonprofits and other organizations in greater Chicago, including efforts designed to improve health and promote health equity.
