Aetna gives $1.3M for King memorial

Hartford managed care provider Aetna Inc. has donated $1.275 million toward construction of a national memorial in Washington D.C. to commemorate civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Construction is under way on the memorial, projected to cost $120 million, in preparation for the Aug. 28 dedication.

Aetna CEO and President Mark T. Bertolini announced at a National Press Club event that a portion of Aetna’s gift will assist in the planting of 185 new cherry trees at the MLK Memorial site on the National Mall.

“Dr. King taught us that ‘America’s true strength lies in its diversity of talents,’ and that our future rests on hope and possibility,” Bertolini said. “His vision rings very true among Aetna employees and the people we serve every day.”
