Payroll processing firm ADP said today that its data shows the United States added 176,000 jobs in August, up from 73,000 a year ago.
The monthly ADP report comes one day in advance of the U.S. Department of Labor’s official initial estimate, which uses a different methodology and is almost always different.
The country added 1.35 million jobs from January to July, according to ADP, while the official government number for that period is 1.18 million.
Another private firm — Challenger, Gray and Christmas —said today that announced job cuts in August were the highest since February, at 50,500. That was up 34 percent from July, when announced cuts were up 57 percent year over year.
Challenger data had Connecticut cutting 540 jobs in August, bringing the state to 12,142 for the year, the highest in New England.
