• The Capital Crossroads to Careers program at Capital Community College is the recipient of the New England Board of Higher Education’s (NEBHE) 2010 Connecticut State Merit Award. Since 2003, NEBHE has recognized individuals and institutions that have made significant contributions to improving higher education opportunities for New England students. The award will be presented in Boston at the Long Wharf Marriott on March 5.

 

• Gov. M. Jodi Rell visited South Windsor to officially transfer former state and town-owned property to the developer of a proposed film studio in town. The state and town land totals approximately 20 acres and is adjacent to a 40-acre parcel of private land near the Interstate 291 and Route 5 junction. The properties together will be home to a high-tech movie studio and production facility. Connecticut Studios proposal includes a prescreening/visitor center, eight sound stages totaling 150,000 square feet, four office buildings totaling 75,000 square feet, and 100,000 square feet for storage. The company’s investment of approximately $65 million is expected to generate more than 500 construction jobs and 114 permanent jobs. In addition, based upon the level of film production, up to 1,500 studio production jobs on an annual basis could be created.

• United Technologies Corp. was acknowledged as No. 1 in a listing of the top 10 American corporations that offers minority internship opportunities. The accolade was announced by INROADS, the nation’s largest nonprofit source of salaried corporate internships for excelling Black, Hispanic/Latino and Native American college students. It was the third year in a row that UTC headed the list. Nearly 200 promising minority college students received INROADS summer internships in 2009 at UTC.

 

• Bristol Hospital held its Annual Auxiliary Ball recently at the Aqua Turf in Southington. More than $100,000 in net proceeds from this year’s event was raised and will benefit the Bristol Hospital Breast Health Initiative. Farmington Savings Bank was the presenting sponsor.

• Cushman & Wakefield recently announced that the Consulate General of Brazil has signed a long-term lease totaling 11,000 square feet on the first floor at One Constitution Plaza in Hartford. The consulate will occupy former bank branch space, offering easy street level access in a highly visible and well known downtown Hartford location.
