AAA Northeast digs in heels on decision to stop licensing services

AAA Northeast has reiterated its decision to stop offering driver licensing services for non-members, despite a threat of legal action from Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

The company covers Fairfield, New Haven and Litchfield counties.

AAA Northeast has offered its services to all Connecticut residents since 2001, whether or not they were members. On Sept. 23, AAA Northeast said it would stop serving the general public, but on Sept. 28 revised that to include only non-members, Malloy said in a letter Monday to AAA Northeast President and CEO Mark Shaw.

In his letter, Malloy said the situation is “unacceptable,” and if the organization refuses to serve non-members he will direct the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles to take “any and all legal steps” to resolve it.

In response, Shaw said in a statement AAA Northeast would serve AAA members only, but add additional services such as registration renewals for members, according to Frances B. Mayko, public affairs specialist.

“I am hopeful that the state will demonstrate a willingness to work with AAA on this matter,” said Shaw. “After working so closely with the DMV for all these years, and completing well over a million registry transactions at no cost to the state, I remain optimistic that we will find a way to move forward that allows our longstanding partnership to continue.”

AAA Allied, which has served Hartford, Middlesex, New London, Tolland and Windham counties since 1992, will continue to serve both members and non-members, said Amy Parmenter, the company’s public and government affairs manager.
